Assessment of hydrodynamics based on Computational Fluid Dynamics to optimize the operation of hybrid tubular photobioreactors

Appropriate hydrodynamic conditions are crucial in photobioreactors (PBR) order to prevent sedimentation of microalgal biomass and ensure the uniform exposure microalgae cells light nutrients. Hydrodynamic also important guarantee efficient mass transfer proper shear stress on transparent walls PBR, which can avoid formation undesired biofilm. Numerical simulations based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) assist improve design optimization PBRs. In this study, CFD was used as a tool investigate hydrodynamics hybrid horizontal tubular PBR designed for cultivation wastewater treatment. The flow regime, average circulation time distribution tubes were evaluated. To establish reliability simulation model validated using tracer experimental tests ultrasonic meter measurements. Results showed that resembled plug with small axial dispersion. simulated velocity profile tube corresponded analytical data.
